You have adopted or bought a dog or a cat in Morocco and you wish to leave the country to settle in another country or simply to let your little furry (or not) animal discover new lands? Don’t panic, we have put together a complete guide to explain how to obtain a passport for your pet in Morocco.
The steps are pretty much the same for all countries from Morocco. However, if you are travelling to a European country, the process takes a little longer as some tests need to be sent to a laboratory in the European Union for analysis. This is because Morocco does not have a laboratory approved by the EU to carry out such tests.
Below are the requirements for obtaining a passport for your pet
- an up-to-date health record with all vaccinations
- an electronic chip for identification
- a serological test which includes a rabies analysis, carried out in a laboratory approved by the European Union (for travel to the EU)
- a certificate of good health issued by your vet
- a travel permit issued by the Office National Sécurité Sanitaire des Produits Alimentaires (ONSSA)
How long does it take to get a passport for my dog or cat?
The whole procedure takes about 90 days, so we strongly advise you to plan ahead. The step that takes the longest is the sending of the serological test which must be sent to a laboratory in France.
How long is your pet’s passport valid?
Your pet’s passport is valid for its entire life, as long as the vaccination reminders are up to date. Please note that if you miss one of the booster shots, you will have to start the whole procedure again!
How much does it cost to obtain a passport for your pet?
The cost of the procedure is approximately 2,000 to 2,500 dirhams, which includes the serological tests, the microchip and the certificate of good health. This does not include the cost of vaccines and booster shots, which cost between 200 and 400 dirhams each.
Where do I go for the procedure and what are the steps to follow?
To obtain your pet’s passport, we advise you to contact your veterinarian, who will be able to take care of the entire procedure until the passport is obtained.
Approximately ten days before your dog or cat is due to travel, your vet will give you a certificate of good health for your pet. You will then need to take this certificate to the ONSSA in Casablanca, which is the city’s veterinary service. After checking that everything is in order, the ONSSA will give you the precious authorization to leave the territory.
Now that the hardest part is over, you can calmly go to the airport with your passport, health certificate and authorisation to leave the country in the name of your pet and fly off with him to other horizons.
Important:
This article was written with the help of Doctor Sbihi of the Vetland veterinary clinic located near the Velodrome. Unfortunately, he has noticed that many animals are abandoned by their owners because they have to leave the country and have already booked their tickets without having taken the appropriate measures to travel with their pet. They are thus forced to abandon their cat or dog, which is often traumatic for them as well as for their pet, who loses all his or her bearings and may even lose his or her life as a result of the emotional shock.
Taking care of a pet is a joy but also a great responsibility. Remember to find out about all the procedures so that you don’t have to leave behind this little being who loves you more than anything. As a reminder, your pet’s passport is valid for life, so once you have obtained it, you will be able to travel with your pet without worrying.
